A client sent us a Pinterest photo a few months back — a matte, deep green kitchen with no handles, doors sitting flush against each other with barely a visible line between them. She asked if that could be done in particleboard. It can't. That look exists because the doors are painted MDF, shaped and finished as a single piece, not because MDF is "better" in some abstract sense. Nobody explains that distinction before the quote lands in your inbox.
MDF costs more than particleboard — chipboard, if you're in the UK. Anyone who's priced a kitchen already knows that much. What gets skipped is why, and whether the premium is actually buying you something, or just a word that sounds upscale on a showroom floor.
What MDF and particleboard actually are — and why comparing them head-to-head is misleading
Particleboard is compressed wood chips faced with a foil or veneer laminate. It's cheaper, structurally fine for a cabinet box, and comes in dozens of finishes off the shelf — the material behind most IKEA and big-box store kitchens. MDF is fine wood fiber pressed under heat into a dense, uniform panel with no visible grain or particle texture. That uniformity is the whole point: it's why MDF can be routed into curves and grooves and sprayed to a flat, pore-free painted finish, something that would expose the rough core underneath if you tried it on laminate-faced particleboard.
The two get treated like a good version and a cheap version of the same product. Not really. They're built for different jobs, and the price follows the job, not some hierarchy of raw material quality.
Where the price gap comes from
The raw MDF board itself isn't dramatically more expensive than particleboard. The gap is in the finishing labor. A foil-wrapped particleboard door gets cut, edge-banded, and it's done — a machine process that takes minutes. A painted MDF door gets sanded, filled, primed, sanded again, then sprayed with two to five coats of finish lacquer, with drying time between each coat. That's days of hand-managed work in a spray booth. That labor is what you're paying for.

On a 12-foot run of cabinets, that's a $1,000 to $1,600 gap on doors alone, before the box, countertop, or hardware.
If a quote says "MDF" at close to the same price as particleboard, ask in writing how many coats of finish are included. A thin, two-coat MDF door chips and cracks along the profiled edges faster than good particleboard, and you've paid more for a worse result.
When MDF earns the price
There are a handful of situations where particleboard physically can't do what you're asking, and the price question stops mattering:
- Handleless doors with a routed finger-pull — the groove is cut directly into the door face, which shatters the foil layer on particleboard.
- Curved or profiled fronts — any radius needs a homogeneous core to hold its shape without chipping.
- Deep matte colors (charcoal, forest green, navy) — foil in these tones shows micro-scratches almost immediately; a sprayed finish can be buffed out.
Outside those situations, MDF is mostly an aesthetic choice, not a technical one.
Where it doesn't
A rental unit, a kitchen doubling as a kid's homework station, or any kitchen you're planning to swap out in seven to ten years — matte MDF loses its logic fast there. Fingerprints show on every matte or high-gloss surface, and in a house with kids they need wiping down almost daily. In that situation, mid-tone foil particleboard (skip pure white or pure black) hides fingerprints and light scratches far better, at roughly half the cost.
There's a moisture issue almost nobody brings up, too. The cabinet under the sink is the most common leak point in any kitchen, whether from condensation or a slow drip in a supply line. Particleboard swells when it takes on water — annoying, but predictable and visible right away. MDF, if the edges aren't fully sealed with lacquer, absorbs water more slowly and more deeply, and the door can warp in a way you don't notice until it's already done. This matters more in humid climates like the US Gulf Coast or coastal UK than in a dry Central European flat, but it's worth checking edge-sealing on the sink cabinet specifically, regardless of material.

What we'd pick, and for whom
For a kitchen that gets cooked in daily, kids or no kids, mid-tone foil particleboard on the box and on any door that isn't directly next to the range is the best value we've seen in practice. We save MDF for the doors where foil physically can't deliver the look — a handleless island, a curved end panel next to a hood, or a kitchen where the budget already earmarked that detail. Mixing both materials in the same kitchen usually isn't a compromise so much as the practical answer.
